THOSE 2016: Kodak Resurrects The Analog Camera Super 8

Thirty-four years after their manufacture, Kodak stimulus stop developing a line of cameras Super 8 with modern connectivity, but always using good old film.

You want to take you to J.J Abrams by turning your movie on a real film? The dream is soon-again-at your fingertips with the announcement by Kodak of the revival of the famous Super 8 format. The American brand has indeed benefited from these to present a prototype of its new camera Super 8, the first in this format since 1982.

Launched in 1964, Super 8 is legendary for all developers-the film-makers – the time and the list of successful filmmakers who support the initiative of Kodak goes from Spielberg to Nolan to by Tarantino. All these monsters of cinema are strong supporters of the film.

Analog and digital

Designated by the famous Swiss designer, Yves Béhar, the Kodak Super 8 new resumes so the famous Chargers to reversal film format. Chargers containing 15 m film, either 2 min 40 of filming at 24 frames per second (the film standard) or 3: 20 when the rate is reduced to 18 FPS (the camera offers rates ranging from 9 to 25 fps).

Optics designed by Ricoh is a luminous 6 mm f/1.2 C-mount lens to which is added a zoom 8-48 mm offered as an option ( see the full datasheet ).

This analog side add a digital aspect. First of all, the viewfinder is other than a LCD screen. Then the back of the built-in camera a large number of Sockets.

The sound on the SD card

With a SD card slot, an input or HDMI output, a USB socket and a USB type printer and what seems to be inputs and outputs 3.5 mm audio jack, the number of available sockets is worthy of a modern camcorder.

Contacted by our care, Kodak explained that the SD card is used to record audio that will eventually be synchronized with the digitized file.

Built-in microphone

If the Super 8 was little expensive at the time, cameras and films were rudimentary. An audio version was born in 1973 (Ektasound), but it was far from being as popular and was discontinued in 1997.

The new Super 8 could resume this format since it is equipped with a 3.5 mm on the front microphone jack. A conditional formula, the number of technical elements, as we saw, still uncertain.

Developers organize the return of film

Of Interstellar to Star Wars: the Force awakens, films in film are more numerous. So much so that the venerable brand Kodak announced that its film division has been profitable in 2015, for the first time in years of losses and turmoil.

The list of the expressions of support from giants of cinema is as impressive as long and demonstrates that creative worlds have ‘sensitive’ and physical media needs to stand the digital rendering. ” When I watch the news, I expect and want this (the image rendering, ndr) looks like in live television.” “However, I don’t want it in my movies ” explains Steven Spielberg in his message of support. And this trend of analog affects both the photo, successfully growing snapshots of Fujifilm called Instax or even return vinyl turntable.

Price: correct purchase, expensive to use

According to a2zcamerablog, the price of the camera would range between 400 and 750 $ – decent to high from the points of view. But the real problem could be the price of consumables. We’re talking $ 50 to $75 for the purchase, development and digitization of a film.

Because analog means a required passage by a broth of chemistry to reveal information on the surface of the film negative. Note that the nature of the film – negative has so – surprising: Unlike the positive film of the time which is still in production, the negative cannot be projected as, it must first be the subject of a positive copy.

The high price of cartridges is explained by the fact that it included the development, the dismissal of the movie at your home and making a digital version available in the cloud via a download link. It’s expensive, but everything is included.

The new Super 8 of Kodak camera is expected to fall in the USA.
