Compare Different Smartphones

The Operating System

As a computer, a smartphone uses an operating system. There are several, but Google completely dominates with its system Android (installed on over 80% of the outstanding smartphones). That of Apple, called iOS , the team iPhone . Microsoft offers for its Windows Phone , proposed by different manufacturers first and foremost Nokia (Microsoft has also acquired in April 2014). Other systems exist, but marginalize ( Blackberry ).

Each has its logic in terms of organization and navigation through menus. Each also has its graphic universe, its software environment and its online application store (see box).

Good to know:

  • Android version installed on the device is a selling point. The high-end smartphones systematically incorporate the latest version, not the most affordable devices. Whatever! The differences from one to the other is often limited to a few small graphical improvements or new features.
  • To distinguish themselves from the competition, manufacturers add a software layer “house” that allows them to offer a graphical interface and some exclusive functions. But they are forced to integrate Google applications by default, such as Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube, Drive, Hangouts, etc.

Good to know:

  • The successive updates of the system are only available for newer iPhone models.Apple gradually ceases to update its devices, anyway, would not necessarily support it because of their material obsolescence.

Windows Phone

The Size Of The Screen

The screens that equip the less high-end smartphones are sometimes less reactive or less bright, but still usable according to WHEREVERSMARTPHONE. This is especially the size of the screen that need to worry about when making his choice. Between a small smartphone 3.8-inch (9.6 cm) and a maxi model 6-inch (15.2 cm), the size varies enormously. More comfortable to watch a movie or write a message, the big smartphones are often referred to as ”  PHABLET  ” in reference to tablets , which they resemble. Going against Apple retains a diagonal of 4 inches (10.1 cm) for the iPhone, so that it is usable with one hand. But the manufacturer might change its mind in the next generation.

Note that the screen resolution is variable: the entry level is limited to the 800 x 480 pixels at best, while the high-end up to 1920 x 1080 pixels (as much as a full HD TV!). Good resolution provides a readability, more sharpness and improved visual comfort.

Photos, videos, applications… You will need to store on your smartphone. The entry-level models are usually limited to 4 GB, which is very insufficient. If your choice is to a model less than 16 GB, make sure in this case that the smartphone features a memory card slot to expand storage. An internal memory of 32 or 64 GB is sufficient.

Good to know:

  • Memory announced by manufacturers does not correspond to the actual available memory for the user. The system and default installed applications occupy a not insignificant space. For example, the iPhone 5S 16GB leaves only 14.7 GB for the user, the LG G2 leaves only 10.6 GB of the 16 GB announced.

The Processor

The high-end smartphones that integrate many functions, require a powerful processor to run smoothly. The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 allows for example to split the screen to use two applications simultaneously, a multiplication of tasks that requires resource. Three major suppliers share the smartphone market. Qualcomm provides cared Android smartphones; Apple team itself its iPhone (it does not manufacture itself processors); Mediatek processor provides the average model range or less. then is to check the rate, which ranges from 800 MHz on the low-end smartphones to over 2 GHz on the latest models.

Good to know:

  • Cheap smartphone usually incorporates some powerful processor that can saturate quickly, revealing saccade during use. No worry about the cared smartphones, manufacturers adapt to the needs of the processor unit.

The Camera

Le Das

Manufacturers have the obligation to mention the SAR (specific absorption rate) of each of their models. The lower it is, the less the device emits waves to “hook” the network. A DAS of less than 0.4 W / kg may be considered low.

Thousands Of Applications

The Google Navigation application on Android and the TomTom iPhone app.

Each user customizes his smartphone by installing applications he wants from those available in the online store. The choice is vast, particularly in the App Store (iOS) and the Play Store (Android). Sometimes the software included is practical, sometimes playful (translation, grammar, restaurants localization, gas stations, games, news, metro map, weather, image editing … and these are just a few examples!) free or paid. More and more companies also offer their own application, whether merchants (Leclerc, Carrefour, Sale-private, Ebay …), newspapers ( L’Equipe ,Le Monde …), TV channels (Arte, France Télévisions, M6 …), transport companies (SNCF, Easyjet, Air France …), banks (BNP, Societe Generale, Bank PO …). Fever same key public services (taxes, National Assembly, Government, Elysee, police headquarters …). And all offer access to their content in a format specifically designed for ergonomics smartphones.

Note that purchased applications are related to your user account. If you change your smartphone without changing the OS, so you can download it again for free. But if you change system (eg passing an iPhone 4S to a Galaxy S3 ), you will all be redeemed.
